Tne Rule Family Connection - An Introduction

The name Rule was at one time famous throughout Mexico because the family head - "The Patriarch" became one of the richest men in the country. He left Cornwall for Mexico as a very young man to make his fortune in the silver mines of Pachuca in the second half of the 19th Century. His surname "Rule" was quintessentially Cornish. By the time he passed on in the 1920's he had bestowed it on 15 children through two marriages. His was a fantastic story literally from rags to riches which is partly  told else where on this site.

For this brief introduction it willl suffice to describe how the two families the Rules and Oughs are connected. Two of his grand children from his first marraige to a Cornish lady were Gordon and Cecil Rule. These two had been born with the proverbial silver spoons  having been brought up in very wealthy circumstances, educated at Hailebury  the well known English public school  in Hertfordshire and in line to inherit the huge hacienda called Chavaria near Pachuca. They started life lacking for nothing and spent their early years between England and Mexico with some travelling to other olaces thrown in.

Gordon Rule never married and so had no issue, It was Cecil who married and his bride in 1931 was  Amy Ough, eldest sister of Walter Glanville Ough whose life is featured in several parts of this site.Their's was initially a happy marriage and resulted in the birth of Audrey and her younger brother Noel.

The stories and records to the  individual Rules who were closest to the Ough family are available through the links below.
